Disaster Case Management Program<\/span><\/h4>\n

Disaster case management is a process where a case manager serves as a single point of contact for individuals or families who were impacted by the floods. This person helps households return to a state of self-sufficiency. The case manager can help families identify their unmet needs, present these needs groups providing assistance to victims and coordinate with volunteer groups for home repairs. They also help clients get connected to services, provide referrals to the appropriate agencies, and help them access services such as government benefits,\u00a0 SNAP, SBA and FEMA applications and appeals, mental health services, housing, home repairs, transportation, and other essential services.<\/p>\n

Disaster Response History<\/h3>\n

Catholic Charities is always called on in times of difficulty and has served the region since 1727. As needs in the community arise, we are able to offer a swift and effective response. We have a proven track record of assisting our community during troubled times.<\/p>\n

Hurricane Isaac, 2012<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans was designated as the lead agency in coordinating local and federal assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac.\u00a0 Through an $8 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) via the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services,\u00a0 Catholic Charities established the Hurricane Isaac Disaster Case management program to assist 1225 people still struggling to rebuild their homes and lives after the damage caused by Hurricane Isaac. Through the Hurricane Isaac Disaster Case Management Program (DCMP), families and individuals in need of recovery assistance were connected to available services and material goods, including long-term sustainable housing, employment, furniture, appliances, counseling services, and more.<\/p>\n

Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill, 2010<\/h4>\n

In response to the devastating effects of the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill in April 2010, Catholic Charities established the Spirit of Hope program that offered behavioral health and supportive services for the families and individuals living in Louisiana\u2019s coastal parishes.\u00a0 Additionally, in October 2010, CCANO secured a $6.7 million grant from British Petroleum (BP) to provide behavioral health services in the affected parishes (Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Mary, St. Tammany, and Terrebonne).\u00a0 Through this grant, the Spirit of Hope Collaborative was established bringing together 15 non-profits from the affected regions. Spirit of Hope helped minimize the impact of the BP oil spill disaster through outreach, community engagement, education, counseling services, and psychiatric services.<\/p>\n

Hurricane Katrina, 2005<\/h4>\n

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Catholic Charities worked tirelessly to coordinate assistance and relief for the people of the Greater New Orleans Area. Within the first year of recovery, Catholic Charities had made strides in reestablishing existing programming and strategically establishing points and programs of assistance in neighborhoods most affected by Katrina including housing, healthcare, education, and economic development. Our response influenced a national model of disaster case management for future disasters.<\/p>\n

In addition, Catholic Charities established Operation Helping Hands<\/strong> in 2005, to aid elderly and disabled residents in the gutting and rebuilding of homes destroyed by floodwaters. Over 29,000 volunteers from across the country joined us in the rebuilding efforts. The program is reactivated based on disaster recovery needs after a major storm.<\/p>\n

Operation Helping Hands, 2005-2012<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Operation Helping Hands was proud to have welcomed 29,730 volunteers<\/strong> to New Orleans from 2005-2012. The volunteers came from across the U.S. and sometimes from across the globe giving\u00a0 850,184 hours of time<\/strong> to rebuild Katrina-damaged homes of elderly and disabled New Orleanians. In sum, the volunteers gutted 1,983 homes<\/strong>, rebuilt 211 homes,<\/strong> and painted 413 homes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac, Operation Helping Hands helped homeowners in Plaquemines and St. John the Baptist Parishes who were affected by this devastating storm. In partnership with Cornerstone Builders and Community Staffing Services (CSS), OHH completed 78 relief projects<\/strong>. Several volunteer groups assisted in both locations.
